Love, A Revelation

Love, A Revelation
A poem written by Terry Macrae

Looking back, I've had more than my share
of exes throughout my current life
on the planet I call home for now.

I thought that I had found love
with some of them but last year
I came to the startling realization
that I didn't really know what love truly is.

On a warm day in August last year,
someone I had just met on an online
dating service turned my lonely life
upside down. That day,
we met for the first time.

She pulled up to my apartment
in her red compact. I walked
over to the driver's side waiting
for her to climb out.

When she did, she looked up
at me as I looked down at her.
Something awakened in me
then that was so unexpected
that I stopped breathing
for a few moments.

From deep inside me, I just knew
that she possessed the soul
that my soul had searched for
but never found, until now.
I was stunned and amazed
all at once.

The revelation was that love
is more than physical or even
emotional attraction though
those were present here.
No, there's much more to it.

Our souls know more than we do.
And my soul knew hers and I felt
that her soul knew it too.
We shared a kiss before she
brought her little dog and her things
into the apartment.

Inside, amidst the rocket's red glare,
we shared the most incredible
night that I had ever experienced
with another human being.
We were more than just intimate.
Our souls communed.

We knew that the Universe
had brought us together
to share real, true love.
Something neither of us
had experienced before.
The special love of soulmates.

We celebrated that love in a beautiful
wedding ceremony in June with family
gathered around.

There is a song by the Grass Roots
called "Lovin' Things" where
the singer sings, "our friends call us
a perfect pair."

My soulmate and I are just that,
a perfect pair, together, forever.
