When Dogs Sled and People Walk Sideways
Ah, here we are. One more day left of our beautiful weekend together. Mallory stopped by yesterday to help us out with the fur babies. She would watch the dogs because Terry and I were headed out to a concert. The Douglas County Fair had 38 Special as the group of the evening, and we wanted to attend.
I took a nice warm shower and got dressed to head out for the event. The excitement was there! I haven't seen 38 Special since I was 17, in Portland. Bachman Turner Overdrive, Aerosmith, and 38 Special played at the Portland International Raceway on the 4th of July. Bachman Turner was the highlight of the show, with Aerosmith and 38 Special opening for them. It was an amazing concert followed by fireworks for the fourth!
That was 48 years ago. Wow. So long ago. Now I'm excited to see them in concert again! Especially if Terry and I could go together. It was going to be a fun evening, filled with good music and of course the company of my sweet man.
All three of us sat out at the table, discussing the dogs, the event, and of course our lives. One of the blog posts of the past covered a medical issue I had a few weeks ago. My ears were so clogged that I was dizzy. Terry had to take me into urgent care to take care of the problem. Cleaning out my ears seemed to help. Well, it came back with a vengeance tonight! I was sitting in the chair, feeling moisture and hearing "sloshing" in my ear. As I messed with it, trying to get the liquid to come out, I suddenly became dizzy again. The table and my family were spinning, and I couldn't walk straight. Old people, right? Sheesh.
Terry suggested that we not go with my walking capabilities being what they were. I felt depressed. Number one, I screwed up his night for him again and the second point of contention was that I really wanted to go! We had it planned for weeks. Instead, we ventured inside the house where we watched Snow Dogs and Togo. Both are movies by Disney about huskies.
Togo is the namesake of our newest family member. He is a Siberian husky, full of vim and vigor. His beautiful icy blue eyes are enough to halt anyone in their tracks. He is a gorgeous little man. Playful, sweet, and intelligent. That and their beauty is what gets the breed into trouble. You can't help but give in to their desires and demands when they put their head on your leg and look up at you with those eyes. Icy blue pools of sheer gorgeousness.
In fact, this is Togo, asking for his wishes to be met while I'm working. Head on the leg and the begging stare. Yes, I did give in, because I'm a sucker when it comes to telling fur babies "no". Can't help it. It's in my DNA to give them what they want and it's in their DNA to ask. Or should I say beg?
Now, I needed a box of Kleenex during the film, Togo. If you get a couple of spare hours to watch the movie, please do. Not because we are now husky owners, but because the film is about the history of the diphtheria epidemic in Alaska. The serum run to Nome was an amazing yet terrifying and above all incredible athletic endurance run for all the dogs pulling the sled, plus their human, Leonhard Seppala's bold, brave, and selfless urge to get serum to those children who were dying of diphtheria in 1925. It covers the harrowing events that took place during the run, including the defiance of age in the 12-year-old pup named Togo.
Once again, the film is worth at least one watch! Yes, I cried, but it doesn't take me much to get going when it comes to heartfelt films like Togo. Incredible story. Good historical value. To Mallory and me, it definitely increased our like and understanding of the name, Togo that Terry chose to call our fluff ball. We didn't care for the name in the beginning, and for the life of me, I could not remember that name. Every time I would consider calling him, the original name of Thor would come out. Now I get why the strong desire to call him Togo. It's a beautiful namesake, that's for sure. One worthy of ensuring I do recall the name.
After Togo, Mallory said she wanted to watch Snow Dogs because she loves the film and because she said I was crying and needed a laugh. Great. Love it when people see me bawling over a movie. I do believe I saw a couple of tears come from Terry's eyes as well though, so I wasn't the only one. Good thing they are family! 👀😁😂💦As long as we can keep the secret that mom is the bawl bag in the family, I'm good.
Disney's Snow Dogs starring James Coburn and Cuba Gooding Jr. If you haven't seen it, it is a lighthearted comedy about a dentist who finds out he is adopted. This leads him to his blood mother's will being read. Of course, she lived in Alaska, which is where he has to travel to learn more about his mother and to find out what she has said in the will. Without giving anything away, all I can say is it is a good comedy. Cuba Gooding Jr. is hilarious as he learns his mother was a musher and has a pack of athletic huskies, and one border collie named Nana. The dogs are cute, even with the added CGI expressions animators created to help the "cuteness" factor along. On a scale of one to 10, I'd say a solid eight, even with the hokey moments that Disney tends to put in their movies. Since it is a Disney movie, the rating is assurance it can be seen by kids of all ages, including the adult children in the household. Worth the watch. Definitely a feel-good comedy film.
Terry went to purchase a sandwich for us from Jack in the Box since I couldn't stand upright to cook. After the second husky movie, it then became time to walk our own husky and chihuahua. We took the dogs out, separately of course, on their nightly walk. We do outings on a separate timeframe, simply because my chihuahua tends to growl, and this gets Togo hyped up and growling as well. Two male dogs are difficult to keep together for long periods, especially when they are as territorial as my Jasper. He hates other male dogs anywhere near his people or him. And near his food? Forget about it. He has been known to attack a 65-pound pit bull-border collie mix I used to have. Nothing stopped him. The little guy is very lucky Kiba was an amazing sweetheart of a canine. Anyway, enough about dogs.
Terry and I concluded our movies, our meal, and our visit with Mallory. Hayden and Mallory headed for home, leaving Terry and I some time to sit in the slight evening breeze to chat. The breeze cooled our warm skin after a day of high 80-degree weather. Once again, my sweet man was great company. I never tire of his presence. Tomorrow is Saturday and I'm hoping my ear is better so I can enjoy my last two days with him. There is always talking, which we love to do, but the ability to actually get up and experience the day with him is awesome. We will see what tomorrow brings.
Hug your loved ones, including those fur babies! Time flies too fast to ignore that one chance to say, "I love you," or to pet your kitties and puppies or whatever else you own from the animal kingdom. Remember to always shine your light and make a difference.
