A Haiku for You

This haiga is a result of Terry's creativity and my photography. Together we believe this is a beautiful piece of art. We will be hanging this in our new home when we move. A haiga is a piece of artwork, such as a photograph or painting, with a haiku superimposed upon it.

My daughter had a pond with blooming lotus flowers in it when she moved in. It was gorgeous! I was so excited to see lotus blossoms shooting out of the murky waters. There were at least 15 blooms the first year.

The picture you see was taken without any filter or manipulation of the image. I'm not sure why the large pink bloom appears to be "glowing" but I thought it added to the beauty of the outcome. That's the explanation of the birth of the photography. Terry can now give the explanation of how the origin of the haiku came about.

Terry:

First of all, it is technically not a haiku, it's a senryu. Senryu are like haiku in form but are typically about human nature instead of Nature, like a haiku. Anyway, I've been writing haiku/senryu for over eight years and have had more than a few published in anthologies and poetry journals.

This haiku is the result of my studies in Buddhism in which the lotus features prominently. The Lotus Sutra is one of the most popular sutras in existence. As was discussed in a previous post: Last Week on A Psychic and A Poet ... (psychicpoetbar.blogspot.com), I recently got a lotus tattoo (the photo of which is in that post). Recently, I was sort of staring at my new tat and an image of a lotus in the act of blooming popped into my head and the senryu emerged from my mouth seconds later. So, I wrote it down on my phone and went inside to read it to Vicki. She loved it and that's how we collaborated on the haiga. That's my first haiga in five years so I can't promise any more.

But hopefully some poetry will make it into this blog.
